Ever since we finished the kitchen late last Spring I have been unimpressed with the wow factor of our glass front cabinet that sits directly over the apron front sink. We have WAC in cabinet lighting installed and it shows off the contents of the painted black cabinet quite nicely – but every time I walk past it, I think “Man, this could be so much better.”For a while I thought about wallpapering the back of the cabinet. I very much love how our orange, white, blue and turquoise glassware looks inside of it – the color just pops on the black – I didn’t want to distract the eye or take away from the beautiful pieces I have on display. The idea of white painted beadboard came to mind, but I quickly passed over that and onto the idea of mirror. Last week, (after staring at this dark cabinet for over a year) we had mirror installed on the back side of our glass front kitchen cabinet.During the day, the cabinet appears to be lit up even when the lights are not turned on – it’s the light from the windows, white floors and white subway tile reflect on the mirror. At night, when the cabinet lights are switched on it sparkles like a jewel box. With the addition of mirror, it’s a lot more like a china hutch. I know a lot of people think mirror can have a 70’s dated look to it and shy away from it – but I couldn’t be happier with the result! As long as it’s done tastefully, decorating with mirror can be terrifically successful.
